I got a hold of some sweet old dirty M4 mouses (#370-1170-01) but the seller did not have the mats, they clean up pretty well tho 🙂 time to build some replacement mats and get these back into action

The Optical MAT
Part# 370-1215
Manufacturer: Sun Microsystems
Description: Type-4 Optical Mouse Pad
Specifications:
- M4 Mouse Pad
- 200 CPI
- 0.032″ x 228.6 x 196.9 mm
Supported Sun Type-4 Mice:
- 370-1169
- 370-1170
Seller Notes:
- 370-1169 = M4 Mouse, 200 CPI, RJ11 uses mousepad 370-1171, 370-1215, or 370-1368.
- 370-1170 = M4 Mouse, 200 CPI, Mini-Din uses mousepad 370-1215 or 370-1368
- 365-1042 = 371-1169 M4 Mouse and Pad, RJ11
- 365-1059 = 370-1170 M4 Mouse and Pad, Mini-Din
- 370-1161 = 370-1170 M4 Mouse and Pad, Mini-Din (unreleased, obsolete)
Sun Type 5 Optical Mice will not work with this mouse pad, they require 300 CPI.
Method of operation
“A detector of an electro-optical mouse having two linear arrays of detector cells at right angles to each other. One linear array images a line and a space in the X direction, while another linear array images a line and a space in the Y irection. Changes in contrast level indicate line crossings. Each linear array has four cells, adjacent cells being 90° out- of-phase with each other. By pairing first and third cells and second and fourth cells of each linear array, then subtracting the output of these, a 180° shift between the cells enhances discrimination of lines and spaces. Lines may be of two colors, or of a single color with optically contrasting line intersections, so long as a total of three contrast levels can be observed by the detector. Counting means is provided for counting line crossings so that observed detector motion on the surface can be made to correspond to cursor motion for a video display.” Abstract from US PATENT 4546347

Recreation Design
I drew it in CAD for laser cutting/engraving/plating/printing.
The 200CPI specifications is “count per inch”. This includes the shaded area, so you sould see 20 transistions in 1/10″ of an inch (just to save counting up to 200 manually).

200CPI is set at 0.254mm spacing with 0.127mm lines (with 0.0762 lines [30%])
300CPI is set at 0.1694mm spacing with 0.0847mm lines (with 0.05082 lines [30%])

Difference between 200 and 300 CPI with 30% lines

Construction
Material is SS304 0.9mm #7 or #8 finish
